Syllable Weight, Stress Patterns and Nativisation
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper looks at stress assignation for unknown foreign words read aloud by Scottish subjects. The syllable structure and syllable weight of the written words is examined, to determine where stress is most likely to be placed according to English stress rules, and the stress rules for the languages of origin of the words are also described. The stress patterns in the spoken responses are then analysed to determine the innuence of syllable weight (both written and spoken), and the perceived language of origin of the word. Applicability of the ndings to a wider context is discussed.

Norwegian stress and quantity: The implications of loanwords
Disyllabic Norwegian words characteristically have an initial syllable which is stressed and heavy and a final syllable which is unstressed and light. Adopting a moraic theory of syllabic representation, the weight of the initial syllable can be realized either with a bimoraic vowel or with a monomoraic vowel followed by a moraic consonant. Monosyllabic words also show variation in the length o...
متن کاملProbabilistic grammar and the Portuguese Stress Corpus
This paper proposes a weight-based probabilistic approach to stress in Portuguese. Previous analyses have argued that weight-sensitivity in the language is categorical and restricted to word-final syllables. I show that weight effects in Portuguese are gradient and can be found across all three positions in the stress domain (three-syllable window). I also compare two domains of weight computat...
متن کاملWord onset patterns and lexical stress in English
Theories of English phonology regard syllable onset patterns as irrelevant to the assignment of lexical stress. This paper describes three studies that challenge this position. Study 1 tested whether stress patterns on a large sample of disyllabic English words varied as a function of word onset. The incidence of trochaic stress increased significantly with the number of consonants in word onse...
متن کاملSyllable weight encodes mostly the same information for English word segmentation as dictionary stress
Stress is a useful cue for English word segmentation. A wide range of computational models have found that stress cues enable a 2-10% improvement in segmentation accuracy, depending on the kind of model, by using input that has been annotated with stress using a pronouncing dictionary. However, stress is neither invariably produced nor unambiguously identifiable in real speech. Heavy syllables,...
متن کاملImpaired word stress pattern discrimination in very-low-birthweight infants during the first 6 months of life.
Prosodic information, such as word stress and speech rhythm, is important in language acquisition, and sensitivity to stress patterns is present from birth onwards. Exposure to prosodic properties of the native language occurs prenatally. Preterm birth and an associated lack of exposure to prosodic information are suspected to affect language acquisition in preterm infants. Fifty healthy very l...
